Transfer your domain – easy and in real time: first steps

Domain transfer – what is it?
When you transfer a domain, you are bringing your existing web domain name to a new provider. At INWX you're in good company: we have tens of thousands of satisfied customers from over 180 countries! Initially, this only concerns the domain itself, not the hosting. You can (still) use other nameservers.

Crucial for domain transfers: the Auth-Code
You want to join us? Good decision! In most cases we need your Auth-Code from your current provider: the "password" for your domain. Simply cancel (an informal email is usually sufficient), have your Auth-Code sent to us – done!

Very important: Save your existing web content first!
Any change of provider will only affect your domain and email address. So be sure to back up any web content you want to transfer! You can usually do this by simply downloading it. You can then upload it in a flash.

Transfer your own domain to INWX – in 3 steps.

You’ll come to us? Great! Transferring your domains registered elsewhere to INWX is really easy. In 3 easy steps you can enjoy all the advantages of INWX.

1. Sign up with INWX

Have a look around first: The first step in changing your provider is to register or log in to INWX. For your overview.

2. Cancel the old contract

Say goodbye to your current provider: You will receive an Auth-Code. This officially certifies that the domain really belongs to you.

3. Enter domain and Auth-Code

You can now enter the domains and Auth-Codes you wish to transfer in the "Domain Transfers" section. Those are quite a few? Contact us for special conditions!

ChecklistWhat You Need for a Successful Transfer

Before transferring a domain to INWX, please make sure the following requirements are met:

1. No Transfer Lock Active
Your domain must not have a transfer-locked status (e.g. clientTransferProhibited). If such a status is set, you will need to ask your current registrar to remove it before the transfer can begin.
2. Valid Contact Email Addresses
Use a WHOIS lookup to confirm that the registrant and administrative contact email addresses are current and accessible – you will receive confirmations and requests via these addresses.
3. Disable WHOIS Privacy
If your domain is currently using a WHOIS privacy service, you will need to ask your current registrar to disable it before the transfer can be initiated.
4. Domain Not Close to Expiry
If your domain expires within the next 5 days or has already expired, this may block the transfer. Please contact our Support before submitting your transfer request in this case.
5. Transfer Duration
The time it takes to transfer your domain depends on the TLD. You can find the exact duration on the respective TLD page on our website.
6. Watch for Notifications
During the transfer process, you may receive an email, a poll message, or a notification in your INWX account area that requires action on your part. Please read these messages carefully – they contain specific instructions in case your active involvement is needed to complete the transfer.

July 2026

Quick and fair response to my question. I thought they would be eager to sell additional products. Quite the opposite - the advice was so fair that I was able to stay with my current server provider. That's rare to find in this market!

Customer service was first class. There is a customer hotline where a real person actually picked up and advised and helped me directly and without any fuss. The follow-up advice by email was also empathetic and likeable.

Fast contact and professional help. Very good!!

October 2026

We moved our .at domain from a large hosting provider to INWX, and the difference is clear. For the same money, you are no longer stuck with tickets that get lost somewhere between reseller and registry.
